What Are Retractable Belt Barrier Stanchions?

Stanchions are those handy little crowd control devices we count on every day for organized foot traffic, even when we’re not conscious of it. Whether you're catching a flight or picking up groceries, you’ve seen these simple posts with their rope or belt barriers in grocery stores, airports, shopping malls, museums, and schools. Retractable belt barrier stanchions are simply these stanchions which have built in retractable belts rather than hanging ropes. At the top of the stanchion post there is a built in cassette which houses a belt inside, and typically belt receivers as well (so that other belts can be clipped into place.)

The belt, designed a bit like a seat belt in your car, can extend and retract as needed. This kind of stanchion is especially common in retail line formation, as its belt conveniently stretches or retracts to accommodate custom lengths and line barriers, and clips into place along the top of the neighboring stanchion post.

Installation varies, but most retractable belt barrier stanchions are free-standing, much like a standard classic post and rope stanchion. This means they can easily be moved around when line formation needs change.

Dual belt stanchions (or “twin retractable belt barriers”, as they're also called) have two belts - one which is at the normal position and height at the top of the post, and one which is approximately halfway down the post. The second stanchion belt helps provide a continuous barrier which is more thorough than a single belt and, being closer to the ground, helps meet ADA requirements for a barrier to be within 27 inches of the ground or less.

Outdoor Crowd Control Stanchions

Outdoor stanchions are similar to safety stanchions, and are designed for weather-resistance and durability. This makes them suitable for even outdoor crowd control events like construction, parking lots, sporting events, and more. This includes a variety of base types which are better equipped for handling inclement weather, like heavy-duty rubber or cast-iron. They also often have long belt lengths of 65 feet or more, and high visibility colors since construction safety is a common use case for outdoor crowd control stanchions.
